POLICE OFFICER

Job Summary: Performs general duty patrol police work, providing service and protecting of life an property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances, prevention of crime, and apprehension of violators. The work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and normally consists of routine patrol; preliminary investigation and traffic regulation duties, which may be performed in patrol cars or on foot; involves an element of personal danger. He or she must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent discretion in meeting emergencies. He or she may b assigned to work special assignments, which may call upon specialized work abilities and knowledge usually obtained as a result of experience as a uniformed patrol officer. Tact and diplomacy are necessary for good public relations. Assignments, along with general and special instructions are received from superior officers, who review methods, abilities and results utilizing reports, personal inspections and discussions; performs related work as assigned.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sergeant.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Examples of Duties:

• Performs proper pre-patrol checks of personal uniform, weapon, vehicle, equipment and required patrol forms and documents.

• Performs residential and commercial routine patrol for crime prevention and the apprehension of violators.

• Performs routine traffic enforcement to include stationary and moving radar, stationary traffic enforcement to include stationary and moving radar, stationary traffic enforcement programs (STEP), and traffic enforcement in school zones.

• Responds to citizens calls for assistance, including calls of a service nature or crimes that may have occurred.

• Responds to alarm calls.

• Checks businesses and residences as part of the normal patrol function.

• Requests assistance from other offices or assists other officers when required in compliance with Department rules and regulations.

• Conducts initial investigations into reported offenses or accidents including reports, witness or suspect statements, taking fingerprints and/or photographs and any immediate follow-up investigations. Call a supervisor for assistance or advice when needed.

• Enforces all local, State and Federal laws, city regulations and ordinances, making arrests when necessary.

• Provides leadership and guidance to any Reserve Officer on duty.

• Directly responsible to the supervisor on duty.

• Performs other tasks or assignments directed by any superior officer.

• Serves warrants or other orders of the courts, according to Police Department Rules and Regulations or law.

Knowledge: Knowledge of approved principal, practices and procedures of city police work; knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances; knowledge of the geographical boundaries of the City and surrounding areas; knowledge of general first aid.

Skills: Skill to communicate in writing and orally; skill in operating equipment.

Abilities: Ability to develop skills in a proper use of firearms; ability to work normally a forty (40) hour work week; can be required to work a rotating shift schedule, or any combination of hours necessary to accomplish the assigned task. Works mostly outside of the office in a patrol car or on foot, is available for duty during inclement weather or under other circumstances requiring additional officers on duty, or when hazards exist which could result in injury or death.

Experience: No previous actual experience is required as long as the Field Training program of the Port Isabel Police Department has been successfully completed. Must be qualified in firearms proficiency.

Education: High school graduate or GED required. Sixty (60) hours of college credits desired.

Licenses and Certificates: Must have a Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. Must hold a current valid Texas Driver's License.

Non-Certified Communication Officer $17,392.20
Certified Communications Officer $21,590.40

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs general communication duties, dispatches patrol officers, keeps appropriate logs, operates the TLETS computer, answers telephones, operates E911 System, deals with walk-in customers and keeps supervisors appraised of shift situations.  Operates in accordance with departmental rules and regulations.  He or she will normally work in the communication center and office indoors.  Supervisors, occasionally requiring movement outdoors and operation of department owned vehicles, may assign other duties.  He or she will be responsible for communications during the assigned shift, bringing problems or violations of communication procedures or F.C.C. regulations, to the attention of the supervisor.  He or she must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent discretion in meeting emergencies.  He or she may be assigned to work special assignments that may call upon specialized work abilities and knowledge usually obtained as a result of experience as a communication specialist.  Assignments, along with general and special instructions are received from superior officers, who review methods, abilities and results utilizing reports, personal inspections and discussions; performs related work as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED, Practical knowledge of approved principals, practices and procedures of city police communication work; knowledge of Federal, State and locals laws and ordinances; knowledge of the geographical boundaries of the City and surrounding areas.  Must be capable of typing 30-40 words per minute. Courtesy, tact and diplomacy are necessary for good public relations. No previous actual experience is required as long as the Field Training Program for communicators or the Port Isabel Police Department has been successfully completed.  Must attend an approved communication course.

BUILDING INSPECTOR

Building Inspector performs duties involving compliance with ordinances, regulations, and laws related to construction to buildings and housing. Required Education, Degree, Certificates and/or Licenses: High School diploma, Valid Driver's License, Must possess a Texas Plumbing Inspector License, Electrical Inspection Certification and ICC Certification is preferred but not mandatory. Minimum two years experience in field inspections, Microsoft Word, Excel and AutoCAD skills are a plus.
