FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-

PORT ISABEL- The Point Isabel Independent School District has suffered major water and wind damage to all its schools. Although immediate remediation was implemented to rectify the damages and ensure that our facilities have a safe learning and teaching environment, the process has delayed our school’s start date.

Please be informed that all PIISD students must report to their campus on Monday, September 8, 2008. All staff members will report to the Long Island Village Recreation Hall at 7:30 a.m. for staff development beginning on Thursday, August 14, 2008.

New student registration as well as secondary student class schedule pick-up will be held Monday through Wednesday, August 11-13, 2008, at the Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Hall for all campuses. Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Hall is located at 230 E. Madison St. off of 705 S. Longoria St.

Debris removal

UPDATED 8/5 Port Isabel- The City of Port Isabel has contracted with TFR Enterprises for Hurricane Dolly Debris Management. Pick up is scheduled to begin today, Tuesday, August 5th. Property owners should take care not to put their storm generated debris directly under power lines or blocking alley ways. Additionally, debris should be placed along the curb and back ten feet onto the property. And please note, brush and other vegetation should be separated from household debris (construction & demolition) such as shingles, carpet, sheetrock, etc.

Port Isabel- The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has announced that as a result of Presidential Disaster Declaration FEMA-1780-DR, TWC is accepting applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) from individuals in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted due to Hurricane Dolly starting Tuesday, July 22, 2008, and continuing. Applications for DUA must be filed by Tuesday, September 2, 2008. >more

SBA (Small Business Administration) can help business owners and individuals obtain LOW INTEREST loans to repair damaged properties by Hurricane Dolly – Low-interest disaster loans are now available to Texas residents and businesses as a result of President Bush’s Federal disaster declaration, Jovita Carranza, Acting Administrator of the U. S. Small Business Administration, announced. The declaration covers the Texas counties of Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy as a result of the effects of Hurricane Dolly beginning July 22. “We look forward to working with the State of Texas to make our loans available to homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes affected by Hurricane Dolly,” said Acting Administrator Carranza. “We will be swift in our efforts to help Texas disaster victims rebuild their homes and businesses. Disaster Recovery Centers will be quickly established in affected areas, and SBA officials will provide one-on-one assistance to disaster loan applicants,” she continued. >more

The Red Cross will offer assistance for immediate emergency needs such as lost or damaged medication, eye glasses, etc. Call 1-866-GET-INFO to register and the Red Cross will assess the damage and need. Mental health professionals are also available. Sasha Cruz, Director of Emergency Service for the four county area says, “I’m in there with you, I’m local and went through the same storm, you are not alone.” Stressing their toll free number, Cruz assured the community that the Red Cross will make sure the needs of the Laguna Madre area are not overlooked.

Types of Special Needs Persons
Who Would Benefit from Registering with 2-1-1*

Category 0: Persons who have no medical needs, but require transportation assistance for evacuation.

Category 1: Persons dependant on others or in need of others for routine care (eating, walking, toileting, etc.) and children under 18 without adult supervision.

Category 2: Persons with physical or developmental disabilities such as blindness, significant hearing impairment, amputation, deaf/blind, and mental retardations.

Category 3: Persons requiring assistance with medical care administration, monitoring by nurse, dependant on equipment (including dialysis), assistance with medications, and mental health disorders.
