BACKGROUND:
The Light House Establishment Cinema is the namesake of the U.S. Light House Establishment, which became a branch of the Coast Guard in 1939. The USLHE was established in 1789 to oversee the colonial lighthouses, and later the Point Isabel Lighthouse when it was constructed in 1852. The Lighthouse Establishment was in charge of "keeping" the lighthouse to ensure navigational traffic passed safely to the Port of Port Isabel, the Port of Matamoros and north to New Orleans. Until 1905 when the Port Isabel Lighthouse was decommissioned, it saw a series of keepers who resided in the Keeper's Cottage now reconstructed on the lighthouse grounds. |
| Now over a century and a half after the construction of the Point Isabel Lighthouse, we can still enjoy the beauty of its architecture and the spectacular 16 mile view it offers from the top. And in 2005 a new project was developed to offer the visitor and local alike a new way to enjoy the lighthouse. Taking advantage of the canvas the lighthouse offers, movies are projected on to the side of the structure.
The LHE Cinema promises to offer a unique experience and create memories to be shared with family and friends.
Debuting during the July 4th celebration in 2005, LHE Cinema has since entertained over 10,000 people who brought their lawn chairs or blankets and found a place under the stars for an evening of family fun.
